Early morning is the best time to call: often the IRS gets busy during the day. Have a completed SS-4  form in front of you.  If you're in the rush (for example, you need to open a checking account), don't forget to point that you need your EIN immediately.

The IRS representative will process your application over the telephone and assign you the EIN. Write this number in the upper right hand corner of your application. Sign and date your completed application form, then fax it to a special fax number you'll receive from IRS representative. Remember, that you must fax your application within 24 hours, or the IRS might cancel your application.

Y
ou will receive a formal confirmation notice from the IRS a few weeks later.
